The development of the terraced fields began in the Qin and Han dynasties and has a history of approximately more than 2,300 years up to now. The 83 – kilometer stretch from Guilin to Yangshuo is the essence of the Li River. The best time to visit Guangxi is from April to October, when the weather is warm and the landscapes are lush and green. Spring and autumn are especially good for outdoor activities like hiking and river cruises. Summer is popular but can be hot and humid.
Guangxi has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, wet summers. Average temperatures range from 50°F (10°C) in January to 90°F (32°C) in July. The rainy season is May to August, so travelers should expect showers during that time.
Snow is very rare in Guangxi. The region has a subtropical climate, so winters are mild compared to northern China. In most areas, you’ll only experience cool, damp weather instead of snow.
Guangxi is famous for its rice noodles, especially Guilin rice noodles with their savory broth and toppings. You’ll also find river fish dishes, stuffed snails, and local snacks like sticky rice cakes.
Guilin is world-famous for its karst mountains, the Li River, and stunning natural scenery. It’s one of China’s top tourist destinations, often described as having the “most beautiful landscape under heaven.” Many visitors also enjoy boat cruises, caves, and traditional villages nearby.
Guilin is very safe for tourists, with low crime rates and a welcoming atmosphere. Most visits are trouble-free, and tourist areas are well-patrolled. Basic precautions like watching your belongings in crowded areas are enough.
The best months to visit Guilin are April, May, September, and October. During these times, the weather is pleasant and the scenery is especially beautiful. This is ideal for a Li River cruise or biking in Yangshuo.
January is the coldest month in Guilin. Average temperatures are around 45–50°F (7–10°C), with damp and chilly air. Warm clothing is recommended if you travel during this time.
Pack light, breathable clothes for spring and summer, plus a rain jacket during the wet season. In autumn, long sleeves and layers are comfortable. Winter can feel damp and chilly, so bring a warm jacket if visiting in December or January.
The high-speed train from Guangzhou to Guilin takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Trains run frequently throughout the day, making it easy for tourists to connect between the two cities. It’s one of the most convenient ways to travel in southern China.
The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo usually takes 4 to 5 hours. Along the way, tourists enjoy stunning karst mountain views, villages, and river life. It’s considered the highlight of a Guilin trip.
