Last August, I left the city heat behind for Guizhou’s cool mountain air. What I found was a province of clear rivers, wooden villages, and dramatic landscapes—made for summer travel.
At Xiaoqikong, the seven-arched bridge looked exactly like the postcards, but it was the water that surprised me—cold, clear, and alive with tiny fish. Dragonflies skimmed the surface as families sat along the banks with their feet in the stream. Even in August, the chill was enough to make me shiver.
Xijiang Miao Village felt like life moving at its own pace. Wooden stilt houses climbed the hillside, their balconies stacked in rows. At dusk, lanterns lit up the slope, and by morning, mist drifted through the valley while roosters called across the rooftops. In the square, Miao women in silver headdresses sang and danced, their voices carrying through the air.
Fanjingshan rose above the clouds like another world. The cable car climbed over thick forest until sharp rock towers appeared in the mist. The final steps to the Golden Summit were steep and worn smooth, but at the top the air was cool and the ridges stretched out in layers to the horizon.
Huangguoshu Waterfall announced itself with sound before sight. The roar grew louder with each turn until the full white curtain came into view, throwing spray and rainbows into the air. Walking the path behind the falls, I was soaked in seconds, but in the summer heat it felt refreshing.
My trip ended in Qingyan Ancient Town, with its stone walls, flagstone alleys, and tiled rooftops. Incense drifted from small temples, shopkeepers leaned in wooden doorways, and just beyond the gates, fields of green spread across the hills. From the top of the wall, the view slowed me down—a quiet moment before heading home.
